Asgard Cantina – Our House Band

The sound behind our reels and stories: homemade, Norse at heart – born of pure necessity and long since turned into a passion.

If you know our videos, you know the sound that goes with them: dark drums, rough voices, a touch of mead hall, a touch of longing for the North. That music comes from our house band Asgard Cantina – and yes, we make it ourselves. By now necessity has even produced two whole albums, and what can we say: we have grown rather fond of it.

What sounds like a nice idea has a very practical reason. If you are on Facebook and Instagram as a business, you effectively are not allowed to freely use purchased or well-known music there: tracks get muted, videos throttled in reach or blocked entirely. For a small workshop, that is a constant stumbling block.

From Sound Engineer to Our Own Edda

I am a trained sound engineer – so I know just how much technology (and, yes, trickery) has always gone into the music industry: voices are tuned, tracks doubled, samples laid in, and many a ghost singer stands behind the stage at major rock acts, singing along live. Once you have seen that up close, you lose a little of your reverence.

I played in a band myself for many years and understand every reservation. But there is no way around it: as business owners we have to make the best – and sometimes the most economical – decisions anyway. And before we risk a cease-and-desist over someone else’s song, we simply make our own.

And honestly? It turned out rather well.

“Skalds have always fibbed a little – we just call it ‘production’ these days. And we would sooner pluck the lyre ourselves than empty the mead-coffers for the cease-and-desist dragon."
